Basescu mentioned the media campaign unfolded during presidential elections, which accused his family of alleged involvement in weapon trafficking, adding he does not consider media as a whole a threat but orchestrated smear campaigns.
In response to whether this particular case justifies the decision to list media campaigns among weaknesses, the head of state answered affirmatively. The head of state said he maintains his viewpoint regarding the matter, adding that „untrue, groundless campaigns aimed to discredit state institutions or dignitaries” are a threat.
Romania’s defense strategy, adopted by the Defense Council late June and sent to Parliament for approval, lists „orchestrated media campaigns that denigrate state institutions by disseminating false information” among threats to national security, beside terrorism, corruption and organized crime.
