Romanian Transporters Accuse Lack Of Road Toll Stickers, Frequent Check-Ups
Transporters said Thursday in a statement that starting with April 15, 2008, over 80% of gas stations in Romania lack road toll stickers, while CNADNR admitted there is a crisis, but hasn’t made that public. Instead, it intensified check-ups asking precisely what they cannot offer.
Transporters said drivers are fined up to 9,000 lei (EUR1=RON3.5768) for missing road toll stickers and consider illegal all the minutes drafted by CNADNR for drivers who lacked stickers.
"It is preposterous to receive a fine for the lack of something they cannot provide you with," the statement added.
The lack of road toll stickers is among the reasons why the federation, along with other employers in transports, organized in the National Road Council, urged the Ministry of Transports to eliminate tolls.
Road transporters protested mid-April on ring roads around Bucharest and another 18 cities in the country, demanding lower taxes, cheaper fuels and better roads.
Among others, transporters demand the elimination of the road toll for national roads, transparency in the collection of fuel excises. Transporters also want employers in the sector to monitor the use of fuel excises for the construction and maintenance of roads.
Transporters met Monday with Transports Ministry state secretary Septimiu Buzasu, however, no agreement was reached and transporters threatened to resume protests in one month.
CNADNR organizes a bid in May to buy road toll stickers for 2008-2009 for an estimated RON47.22 million.
