Bucharest Gendarmerie Chief Demoted Over September Police Protest
Romania’s then interior minister, Vasile Blaga, resigned after that protest.
Pop was sanctioned over defective management, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX.
Gendarmerie spokesman Marius Teodorescu confirmed Pop has been dismissed and said he would be replaced by deputy chief Eugen Meran. He added Pop would be appointed to another position.
Thousands of police workers protested pay cuts at the Government headquarters on September from where they left on an unauthorized march up to the presidential palace. President Traian Basescu said at the time the protest undermined state institutions and he renounced the protection services of the Police and Gendarmerie.
