The president said he hopes the Romanian troops’ mission in Afghanistan will be successfully completed, adding it is his duty as head of state to be close to the soldiers deployed in war zones.

Basescu told the troops they are assigned a difficult task, that of protecting the civilized world from terrorism.

„I strongly wish that during my second term as president our troops would declare their mission complete, just as it happened during my first term with the troops deployed in Iraq,” the president said.

Basescu decorated Curtea de Arges 33 Battalion stationed in Qalat with the ‘Military Virtue’ Order. The battalion has 866 troops of which 24 are women.

The president had his meal with the Romanian soldiers and stood in line beside them to get his food.

President Basescu, Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea and General Staff chief Gheorghe Marin arrived in Afghanistan Thursday morning to meet with the Romanian troops deployed in the area.

Romania currently has 1,020 troops in Afghanistan and has recently decided to deploy 600 more troops in the area.

Over the past years, 12 Romanian troops were killed during military operations in Afghanistan.
