Justice Minister Tudorel Toader announced that the selection process will include designating three candidates for the office until March 31. The candidate selection procedure will be held by the Justice Ministry.
The EPPO is expected to begin its activity by the end of 2020.
The main favorite for the agency’s chief prosecutor role is the former leader of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), Laura Codruta Kovesi, who was dismissed from the office at the behest of the justice minister.
Toader also spoke out against the Romanian prosecutor’s candidacy, announcing that he informed his counterparts in other EU member-states about the reasons for which he dismissed her.
Kovesi was noted as first in the order of preferences on a three-candidate shortlist for the job, but has accused internal attempts to derail her bid after the Supreme Court’s Section for Investigating Judicial Offences deemed her a suspect in a case revolving the 2011 repatriation of a fugitive businessman.
The former DNA chief is set to be interviewed by the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs next week.
