The woman, 30, returned from the U.S. on May 23 with her two children.
Romanian health minister Ion Bazac said the woman went to the hospital Tuesday with a fever and the virus was confirmed Wednesday. The patient’s family members have also been isolated at the hospital and are being tested.
The woman is receiving treatment and “she will recover”, the minister said.
"We consider this case suspicious and we have sent samples for further tests in London, although the virus has been confirmed in Romania,” Bazac said, adding that, as of Wednesday, Romania is on the official list of countries that confirmed occurrences of the A H1N1 virus.
He added samples were sent to London because the procedure is mandatory, but the virus is 99% confirmed.
The minster added authorities are on alert and are working to identify all the people with whom the patient came into contact on her way to Romania and in the country.
The minister also said the ‘Matei Bals’ hospital is well prepared to handle the case.
Since the first infections with the A H1N1 virus were reported around the world, Romania has had 66 suspected cases that haven’t been made public pending final tests.
