Peter Maffay Foundation To Invest EUR3M In Romanian Summer Camp For Children
Maffay on Wednesday opened the site where the children’s camp will be built, located on the site of the Roades village fortified church’s parish house. The camp is the first stage of the project „Roades fortified church – a protected space for children” financed by the Peter Maffay Foundation and the Tabaluga Foundation, for which EUR500,000 has been allotted.
The camp will host 14 socially disadvantaged children from all over Europe for two weeks each, providing them with therapy through music and nature. It should open in the spring of 2011.
Maffay selected Roades village to host the camp after visiting several Transylvanian villages with fortified churches. The project also includes restoring the local church, which fell into disrepair after ethnic Saxons left the region.
The Brasov County Council and local authorities have committed to aiding the project by providing utilities and necessary infrastructure. The Council awarded the singer a Diploma of Excellence for his involvement in the social life of the Brasov community.
Peter Maffay was born in Brasov, central Romania, in 1949 and moved to Germany in 1963. He has built a successful career in Germany and is one of the country’s most popular pop-rock artists.
The „Peter Maffay” Foundation was set up in 2000 and is one of a network of international NGOs which provide help for children who have been traumatized by abuse, deaths in the family or alcohol and drug consumption. The Foundation currently runs a summer home in Mallorca, where children receive counseling and therapy.
