European Commissioner for Information Society and Media Viviane Reding sent a letter Friday to Romania’s IT&C minister Karoly Borbely requesting additional information by Sept 26 both on the reorganization of ANRCTI and on the reasons leading to the dismissal of the regulator’s former president Dan Georgescu.

Reding expressed concern over the government’s measures to reorganize ANRCTI, mainly by adopting an emergency ordinance at the same as the Parliament is to adopt a new law on the same object and also on the same day the court suspended the decision to dismiss Georgescu.

The government on Thursday decided to reorganize ANRCTI and changed its name into National Communications Agency.

ANRCTI was restructured to have a “single body managing the state’s resources in the field, namely telephony numbers, the radio spectrum, the internet domains .ro,” said secretary of state with the Ministry of Communications, Constantin Tedorescu.

Romanian Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu in August dismissed Georgescu from his post as head of ANRCTI, citing the infringement of several laws in the IT&C field.

However, the Bucharest Court of Appeals on Thursday overturned the premier’s decision and ruled Georgescu was free to return to office.
