"We are nearing the final phase with the auction for the selection of the equipment supplier for the IPTV project. The solution we are targeting needs to provide high standards of quality, the most advanced characteristics for such a project and it needs to be implemented on a large scale," Popescu said.

RomTelecom is the largest local fixed telephony operator, with a portfolio of some three million subscribers at the end of September 2008.

IP Television allows the viewing of a wider range of TV channels compared to cable and satellite television, superior image and sound quality and access to functions such as reruns of the programs broadcast in the past 24 hours, electronic TV guide, access to online games or to order the viewing of certain films or TV shows for a fee (Video on Demand).

On the local market, the only operator supplying IPTV is iNES Group, which has entered this segment at the end of 2006. According to data from the National Authority for Communications, iNES Group had 280 clients at the end of June 2008.

RomTelecom is controlled by Greek group OTE, which holds 54.01% of the operator’s shares, with the remaining shares held by the Romanian state.

In the first nine months of the year 2008, RomTelecom registered operation losses of EUR14.4 million, with revenues reaching EUR656.4 million.
