Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday he assumes, together with the government and the central bank, the agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

He recognized that his implication in the negotiations was “too strong and public,” but added “this was not abnormal,” as no head of state can be passive in a crisis situation.

Basescu said the agreement was needed, adding he assumed the IMF loan to prevent further comments that he would criticize in the future the agreement.

Last week, Romania agreed a EUR20 billion financial package with the IMF, the European Union and other international institutions to help the country cushion the effects of the global crisis.
