Asked whether he thinks voters will choose parties or people in the first uninominal general election, the social democrat said: “A combination of the two. Political votes prevail but we also have direct communication with individual candidates. And this was good for candidates because it mobilized them. But the political vote still prevails.”
Speaking about the low voter turnout, Iliescu said people have grown tired of political competition and Romanians are also disappointed.
"High absentee rates are a signal for politicians, parties and the government,” Iliescu said.
The former head of state was accompanied at the polls by his wife, Nina Iliescu, who said “it is very good” that her husband decided not to run for a seat in Senate.
