Romanian Presidential Election Prelim Results At GMT0900: Basescu – 32.84%, Geoana – 29.82%

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 32.84% of votes in the first round of elections and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 29.82%, according to preliminary results released by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 74.14% of polling stations.

According to preliminary results released by the Electoral Bureau Monday morning, liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.35% of the votes.

Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.42% %), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (4.44%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.32%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.87%).

The other candidates earned less than 1%, according to the preliminary results released by the Electoral Bureau. Green Party candidate Remus Cernea obtained 0.64%, socialist Constantin Rotaru – 0.43 %, independent Eduard Manole – 0.36%, Ecologist Party candidate Ovidiu Iane – 0.23% and independent Ninel Potarca earned 0.21%.
