Ten Thousand Romanians Took Luxury Vacations This Year, But Lowered Travel Budgets

Ten thousand Romanians bought luxury vacation packages this year, 25% more than in 2008, despite the economic crisis, but they did lower their travel budgets, Romania’s association of tour operators’ association ANAT said Friday.

„This year, about 10,000 Romanians with high incomes took luxury vacations, 25% more than last year. The best selling destinations were Cuba, the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, Mauritius, as well as Mexico and Thailand. Five thousand others went on cruises and preferred Mediterranean destinations,” ANAT spokesman Traian Badulescu said Friday.

Badulescu added prices for luxury vacations decreased 25-30% this year compared to 2008, and in some cases, prices were lowered by as much as 70%. On average, prices of a luxury vacation package cost EUR2,500-3,000, there were tourists who paid as much as EUR37,000 for a vacation.
