Romanian Doctors Eye EU Jobs

Te Bucharest Medical College (CMB) is registering, on a daily basis, between eight and 15 requests for documents that would allow doctors to work in hospitals in the EU, the numbers being worrisome since the number of doctors in Romania is almost the lowest in Europe, according to professor Ioan Lascar.

Lascar stated Thursday that the Ministry of Health has registered some 3,000 requests for the acknowledgement of training, in view of working in a hospital within the EU, while 1,900 doctors are already employed in EU hospitals.

Of the total 521 requests already issued by CMB, the most – 158 (30.3%) – were for employment in French hospitals, 144 (27.6%) in England, 40 (7.7%) in Belgium, 35 (6.7%) in Italy, 31 (5.95%) in Sweden, 29 (5.96%) in Germany, 22 (4.22%) in Ireland and 21 (4.03%) in Spain.

According to Lascar, the doctors’ exodus is a very complex material and social problem, starting from the lack of motivation for the doctors.
