Pruteanu, 61, passed away on Thursday night of a heart attack. An impressive number of ordinary people came to pay their respects to a man of a high cultural value. Pruteanu was buried on Aleea Scriitorilor (Writers Alley).
“George Pruteanu was a great man and an important cultural figure for Romania, and we collaborated excellently. He was a man who left behind generations of students that had the honor of having him as their professor, a straightforward man who spoke his mind every time he had the opportunity. It is indeed, a great loss,” said senate president Nicolae Vacaroiu.
Born on December 15, 1947, Pruteanu was a university professor, politician and literary critic.
In 1996 he was elected senator for the Christian democratic party PNTCD, but quit the party two years later. In 2000 he was again elected senator, as a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). In 2003, Pruteanu left the social democrats to join the far right Greater Romania Party (PRM).
Adrian Cristian Papari, pro-rector of the Andrei Saguna University in Constanta awarded Pruteanu with the Order “Saguna Spirit” and said that the Journalism Faculty within the University will be named “George Pruteanu,” as to honor the name of a famous man of culture.
