Court spokeswoman Ana Maria Miclaus said the court rejected Anghel’s request to have his sentenced interrupted for two months and only granted him one. The court ruling is effective immediately and Anghel will be released Friday evening.

Anghel refused to make any comments.

Anghel was sentenced mid-March to two and a half years in prison for corruption. Judges also impounded the mayor’s assets, as he has to pay the local mayoralty EUR394,000.

Anghel was indicted by anticorruption prosecutors in September 2007, on charges of influence peddling. He was accused of buying for buying a property for city hall at a vastly inflated price, thus defrauding the city hall’s budget of nearly EUR400,000.

Anghel has been mayor of Baia Mare for several consecutive terms since 1993. He was also the head of the county branch of the Liberal Party, in opposition, but resigned following his conviction.
