The U.N. proclaimed the year 1974 the „International Population Year” and July 11 is celebrated as World Population Day.
It is estimated that the world’s population reached one billion around the year 1800, to reach two billion in 1927, four billion in 1974 and exceed six billion 13 years later, in 1999. The U.N. estimates the Earth’s population will reach about seven billion this year.
On January 1, 2010, Romania’s population stood at 21.462 million, of which 48.7 men and 51.3% women, according to the Statistics Institute.
Romania ranks seventh in the European Union by population numbers, following Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain and Poland.
The country’s young population (0-14 years) accounted for 15.2% of the total, the adult population accounted for 69.9% and the elderly (65 years and more) accounted for 14.9%.
