The Platts Top 250 Global Energy Companies ranking, now in its eighth year, measures corporate leadership by examining each company’s performance and tracks the changes in ranks of regional energy companies as they increasingly assume a greater role in global energy sustainability.

The underlying data are derived from the Compustat database, which is compiled and maintained by Standard & Poor’s. All ranked companies have assets greater than $2 billion.

Newcomer to the Platts 250 global energy top, Romania’s Petrom managed to outrank larger companies, such as PKN Orlen in Poland or Finnish Neste Oil.

Petrom ranks 184th based on asset value, with an estimated $8.424 at the end of 2008. The company’s revenues, of $6.03 billion, put it on the 164th position worldwide, while its $365 million profit gained it the 161st place in the ranking.

The company ranks 122nd based on return on invested capital, which stood at $6.79 billion at the end of last year.

US Exxon Mobil Corp retained the number one spot for the fifth year running in the Platts 250 global energy ranking, followed by fellow country company Chevron corp and British Royal Dutch Shell.

Petrom’s parent company OMV ranks 32nd in the Platts 250 top.

Platts, the world’s leading energy information provider and a division of US The McGraw-Hill Companies, serves customers across more than 150 countries.
