The work accident is being investigated by the local labor inspectorate, police and prosecutors. Local labor inspectorate head Emilian Rosca said Wednesday that preliminary investigations indicate the three workers were intoxicated with gas vapors.

Rosca said a 36 and a 45 year-old man died and a third worker is being treated at the emergency hospital in Cluj-Napoca.

Local police spokesperson Gina Pop said the workers were supposed to fix a machine used to process animal waste and entered the working area without wearing gas masks for protection.

"One worker was supposed to replace a chain in a machine used to process animal waste. He got sick from the ammonia vapors used in the process and fell in a four-meter deep tub,” Pop said.

She added the second worker who died tried to help the first, but also got sick. The third worker, who had also come to help, managed to call for help.
