Romanian foreign affairs minister Cristian Diaconescu said Sunday in a press conference that 140 Romanian citizens in Belfast, including 40 minors, expressed, at one point, their wish to leave Belfast and return to the country.
"As soon as these incidents occurred, our diplomatic office established contact with local authorities and cooperation is beyond reproach," Diaconescu said, thanking authorities in Belfast.
Romanian ambassador to London Ion Jinga met last Thursday with Romanian nationals targeted by a series of racist attacks and most of them said they wish to return to Romania.
Several families of Romanians of Roma ethnicity have been living in terror for the past few days because of recent racist attacks targeting them along other immigrants. About 130 Romanians who requested protection were housed in the hostels of Queen’s University in Belfast.
