EC Indicates Romanian Transport Ministry Was Incapable Of Promoting Any Projects – President

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Monday, before leaving for Brussels to meet with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, that the Commission’s reports indicate that if Romania has a ministry that wasn’t capable of promoting any projects, that was the Ministry of Transport.

Basescu said he hopes the clarifications to be presented by the Romanian side during the one and a half-hour meeting with Barosso will allow the country to make a more efficient use of European funds.

"Please note I’m not criticizing any one person. All the reports of the European Commission indicate that if there was a ministry that was incapable of promoting any project that would receive approval, that is the Ministry of Transportation. The area of maximum interest is the farthest behind from the point of view of project approvals,” the head of state said.

“We’ll have to find a solution, we’ll see what the European Commission proposes, to have infrastructure works start this year,” Basescu added.

Basescu will attend a working lunch Monday in Brussels with EC president Barroso and will discuss the economic crisis, the transit of natural gas to Europe, and possibly security in the Middle East, the president’s office said.

The Romanian delegation also includes Prime Minister Emil Boc, deputy prime minister Dan Nica, economy minister Adriean Videanu, foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu and the head of the Department for European Affairs, Vasile Puscas.
