The public employees affiliated with the SNFP union also called on the Government to comply with court decisions acknowledging their rights, and complained that overtime is not paid.

Eventually, a union delegation was called in for negotiations.

Bogdan Hossu, leader of Cartel Alfa, a confederation of Romanian trade unions, said the protesters direct most of the criticism to the unitary wage law, specifically the provision eliminating collective labor contracts.

Valer Suciu, leader of the National Federation of Public Administration Unions (FNSA), announced on Wednesday that his organization will picket the Government headquarters on April 30 and stage a full-blown strike on May 5 over wage cuts.

Suciu said about 1,000 public administration employees will picket the Government on April 30, adding the calendar of a full-blown strike will be set in a union meeting scheduled for April 29.

Suciu said public administration employees’ protests are triggered mainly by salary reductions. He added the Government reduced salaries in the public administration sector and ignored provisions of collective work contracts and court decisions which ruled these contracts legal.
