Minimum Wage Over RON500 Would Pose Economic Risks – PM

A minimum wage higher than the government’s proposed RON500 for 2008 would drive Romania’s economy into a “risk area”, overthrowing the country’s robust economic growth, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Wednesday.

"I myself would like to set the minimum wage at 500 euros as soon as possible, but wage growth needs to be sustained or we might sideslip," Tariceanu told a news conference in Romania’s eastern city of Bacau.

Leaders of Romania’s union confederations demanded Tuesday afternoon an emergency meeting with the prime minister to discuss again the planned 2008 minimum wage and state budget, threatening ample protests.

Union leaders also plan to meet with leaders of political parties to demand changes in the planned budget.
