Iraqi Appeals Court Cancels Death Sentence For Munaf - Press

An Iraq court tried Munaf, an American-Iraqi citizen, for the kidnapping of journalists and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Munaf has been in the custody of the multinational force near Baghdad International Airport and his lawyers have contested the right of U.S. officials to hand over an American citizen to another government likely to torture and kill him.

According to the National Public Radio, the Iraqi court of appeals set aside Munaf’s conviction, as the supposed basis for his conviction — a transcript of his confession and written statements of witnesses against him — could not be found.

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Munaf’s case on March 25, following a brief seeking judicial review and a writ of habeas corpus filed by The Brennan Center for Justice, along with the MacArthur Center for Justice.
