The two decisions were included in the country’s draft law aimed at reducing budget expenditures, which was sent to the Parliament for a confidence vote.
The Government also decided to repeal the law whereby teachers were granted EUR100 to purchase books and other educational stuff used during their educational activities.
The Executive estimates that the recently announced austerity measures will reduce staff expenses and social security expenses by 1% of the gross domestic product in each of the two cases.
Romania, which has been hit by the deepest recession in at least 20 years, has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of the gross domestic product under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year. The Government this weekend adopted two draft laws that make up its austerity measures, which include reducing pensions by 15% and state employees’ salaries by 25%.
