Romanian Carmaker Dacia Sales In Europe Double In May, Up 21.7% In Jan-May

Sales in Europe of Romanian carmaker Automobile Dacia, a unit of France’s Renault, doubled on the year in May to 25,000 cars and increased 21.7% in the first five months of the year, to some 90,000 cars on a declining market, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) said Tuesday.

Dacia’s passenger car sales on its 28 markets in Europe (EU except Malta and Cyprus, plus in Iceland, Norway, Switzerland) increased 99.8% on the year in May, to 24,894 cars from 12,458 cars in May 2008. January through May, Dacia sold 89,965 cars, up 21.7% from 73,929 in the first five months of 2008, according to ACEA data.

The European auto market contracted 4.9% in May, to 1.27 million new cars registered from 1.335 million cars registered in May 2008. In the first five months, the 28 markets registered a sharp decline of 13.9%.

The decline of the European auto market slowed, however, compared to the first four months of the year, when the decline was of 15.9%.

In Western Europe (EU 15 plus EFTA – Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), Dacia sales increased 3.6 times in May, to 19,933 cars from 5,421 cars in May 2008. In the first five months, Dacia sales in Western Europe increased 83.3%, to 69,786 cars from 38,074 in January-May 2008.

Renault Group, the owner of Dacia, saw a 16.7% decrease in total sales in Europe in January-May, to 502,000 cars from 603,000 the year before, but decline in sales slowed in May to just 4.4%, to 112,000 cars in May from 117,000 cars in May 2008.

Germany’s Volkswagen remained the top selling brand in Europe, with an increase of 9.2% in sales in May and a slight decline of 2.3% in the first five months.
