“Foreign Minister Franco Frattini expressed his utter bewilderment at the statements made by his Romanian counterpart, Cristian Diaconescu. Franco Frattini restates that the Italian government denounces any type of violence, regardless the nationality of the offender,” the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, quoted by Adnkronos.
“No member of the Italian government used remarks that can be considered xenophobic. Our country has always been known for its tolerance and hospitality. As to Community norms, Italy – a founding member of the European Community – has been actively participating in playing a constructive part to consolidate a European space of freedom and justice,” the statement continued.
On Monday, Romania’s Foreign Ministry said the Italian authorities should revise their attitude and language toward Romanian nationals.
“The Romanian Embassy in Rome notified Italy’s Foreign Ministry on cases of violence and discriminatory and xenophobic attitude against the entire Romanian community in Italy, requesting such situations be prevented and a change of language, including on the political level,” the ministry said.
Also, Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu harshly criticized the “provocative” attitude of certain members of the Italian government, saying this could be interpreted as instigation to “xenophobic” behavior.
