Romanian President Notices ‘Anomalies’ Btw Wages In Public, Production Sectors

Employees of public institutions are paid way above the employees in the production sector, which is “kind of an anomaly,” Romanian President Traian Basescu said after talks with employers’ associations on Wednesday.

Basescu reiterated his proposition to have salaries frozen for a period of six months in a move to aid the country’s ailing economy.

“You know the economic situation as well as I do,” Basescu told the representatives of the employers’ associations.

The head of state mentioned that the latest international reports show that the financial crisis is worse than it was believed in October.

“Clearly, no one could assess correctly the depth of the economic crisis (…) It is a good thing we don’t face a banking crisis as well,” Basescu said.

He mentioned his current efforts are channeled into persuading interested parties to direct the money from the state budget to the economy.
