Romanian Sandra Izbasa Wins Women’s Floor Exercise Olympic Gold

Izbasa scored 15.650 to edge out reigning world champion Shawn Johnson of the United States into second position on 15.500, her compatriot Nastia Liukin claiming bronze with 15.425.

Izbasa’s win is the sixth time a Romanian woman has taken the floor exercise gold at the Olympics since the 1980 Moscow Games.

Izbasa thus brought the fourth gold medal to Romania at the 2008 Beijing Olympics after judoka Alina Dumitru, rowers Georgeta Andrunache and Viorica Susanu and athlete Constantina Dita Tomescu (marathon).
