Romania Postpones Reorganization Plans On Lack Of Political Support From Hungarian Minority Party

Romania’s ruling coalition has decided to postpone plans on the country’s administrative reorganization as the Hungarian minority party UDMR, part of the coalition, rejected all the propositions put forth by the ruling Democratic Liberal Party, said UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor.

The leaders of the coalition met Monday to discuss the country’s administrative reorganization but decided to postpone the process, which didn’t garner the support of the Hungarian minority.

Also Monday, Chamber speaker and Democratic Liberal Party vice-president Roberta Anastase said the coalition will set up a commission that will analyze reorganization issues this fall, as the Government continues decentralizing institutions across the country.

Kelemen said Saturday after a party meeting UDMR does not want the reorganization issue to spark a political crisis and would rather put the issue on hold and discuss it again this fall or early next year.

Kelemen pointed out that UDMR, which represents the interests of about 1.4 million ethnic Hungarians, will not agree with a reorganization plan that divides the Hungarian community in Romania.
