Romania’s population increased in July 2009, for the first time over the past six months, on the backdrop of a positive growth rate, the National Institute of Statistics, or INS, said Tuesday.

In July 2009, Romania reported 21,132 newborns, up by 2,654 on the month and up by 304 on the year and registered 19,636 deaths, down by 95 on the month and up by 712 on the year.

The positive growth rate triggered an increase in population by 1,496 people in July 2009, compared with a decrease by 1,253 people in June 2009.

In July 2009, Romania reported 18,588 marriages, up by 7,422 on the month and up by 86 on the year, and registered 2,306 divorces, down by 978 on the month and up by 455 on the year.

Romania’s population was up by 1,496 people in July 2009 and up by 1,904 people in July 2008.

The number of infants under one year old deceased in July 2009 was higher by 15 infants on the year.
