Romania’s August Annual Inflation, Highest In EU

Romania posted the highest inflation in the European Union in August, while the EU average rate eased to 2%, from 2.1% in July, official data showed Wednesday.

A year earlier, the EU inflation was 0.6%, EU’s statistics office Eurostat said.

Romania reported the highest annual inflation in the EU, followed by Greece (5.6%) and Hungary (3.6%), while the lowest annual rates were observed in Ireland (-1.2%), Latvia (-0.4%) and Germany (1%).

The lowest 12-month averages up to August were registered in Ireland (-2.3%), Latvia (-2.0%), Portugal and Slovakia (both 0.3%), and the highest in Hungary and Romania (both 5.0%) and Greece (3.5%).

Romanian consumer prices rose 0.2% in August compared with the month earlier. EU’s monthly inflation was 0.2%.

Annual inflation in the 16 states that use the euro was 1.6% in August, down from 1.7% in July. A year earlier, eurozone’s rate was -0.2%.
