The retirement could result in the appeal case being restarted, despite the fact that minimal progress achieved due to past uncertainty regarding the five-judge panels.
The Supreme Court’s Panel 2, which handles Dragnea’s appeal, also contains judges Simona Enceanu, Tatiana Rog, Alexandra Rus and Rodica Popa.
According to the Supreme Court’s internal regulation, its leadership must publicly draw a new judge for the panels if one of them is released from the role.
Liviu Dragnea was sentenced in July 2018 to three and a half years in prison, after he was charged with instigating abuse of office in a case regarding the fictitious hiring of two PSD party members at a Teleorman county social services agency.
