Korodi said RON80 million were collected in the two months since the tax was instated as the country had stocks of unregistered cars, which have now run out.
"We won’t be able to get RON40 million times 12 months, and we didn’t include such expectations in our calculation either,” the minister said.
New car sales in Romania decreased 2.9% on the year in the first eight months of 2008, to 198,934 units, while the entire automotive market increased 1%, fueled by commercial vehicle sales, according to data of the Association of Automotive Manufacturers and Importers in Romania.
The environment minister said that if the Parliament decides to cancel the government ordinance introducing the pollution tax for cars, all programs financed using the Environment Fund would be halted.
The tax was introduced on July 1, 2008, to replace the former tax on the first registration of cars, which was effective from 2007 until July 2008.
The Senate voted early September to cancel the tax and give people their money back, but the Chamber of Deputies will have the final vote on the law.
