Justice Minister To Present Report Regarding Sentence Compensation On Monday

The minister announced that he will make an analysis on the effects of the bill, which reduces prison sentences for inmates serving them in poor conditions. According to the act, for every thirty days served in a prison not up to EU standards, each inmate would receive five days off his sentence.
The subject came back into focus recently as official data from Romania’s National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) showed that hundreds of inmates who benefitted from early releases were re-captured shortly after for repeat offences, some of them violent.
“We will make a general analysis of the dynamics of this crime phenomenon, a new evaluation of the ANP statistics, we will analyze the causality, structure, consequences of the acts committed by those who benefitted from the law,” said the Romanian justice minister.
The announcement came after Toader met with Prime Minister Viorica Dancila earlier in the day to discuss the subject. President Klaus Iohannis also requested the Government to analyze and find solutions on the matter in a statement on Wednesday.
