The procedure started on Wednesday and will take place until April 5, with one candidate to be nominated for the role.
According to Romanian law, the general prosecutor is proposed by the justice minister and must be approved by the Romanian president.
Eligible prosecutors can file their candidacies until March 28, with the justice minister to hold interviews on April 3 and 4.
Justice Minister Tudorel Toader launched the procedure to dismiss Augustin Lazar in October 2018, but the request was rejected by President Klaus Iohannis.
