“We respect the internal procedures of Great Britain and we hope that its political debate on Brexit will allow finding a political solution which will gain the support of a majority of British MPs. In this sense, we are awaiting solid proposals from the British Government regarding the next steps and actions it will take in the following period,” the ministry says in the statement.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry also added that the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU is a major priority for Romania’s EU Council presidency, and that it is in constant communication with EU institutions and other member states regarding the subject.
This comes after the UK’s House of Commons rejected the EU withdrawal agreement negotiated by the Theresa May Government on Tuesday, with a large majority opposing the act.
The result of the vote plunged the withdrawal process into uncertainty, as the two-year negotiation period for Brexit is set to expire on March 29. If the term is reached without a deal and without being postponed, the United Kingdom is set to abruptly cease its EU membership.
