Romanian Govt Amends NATO Accession Law, Though Romania Has Been NATO Member Since 2004

The current Constitution, which was adopted in 2003, before Romania joined NATO, states that the law regarding Romania’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization must be approved by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies in a plenary meeting, with a two-third majority.

The law regulating Romania’s accession to NATO was adopted on February 26, 2004 by the Parliament’s two chambers, was promulgated on March 1, 2004 and was published in the Official Journal on March 3, 2004.

On March 29, 2004, Romania became a full-right NATO member.

Romania’s Government decided Wednesday to put forward a draft law for the revision of the Constitution, providing for a single-chamber Parliament and a maximum of 300 MPs, which was forwarded to the head of state. The single chamber will be called the House of Representatives and will comprise up to 300 MPs.
