Klaus Iohannis, on Russian oil and gas imports ban: Romania is ready

"The proposal made by the Commission is one that we support. This proposal envisages a phasing out of Russian oil imports in the next six months. The topic is not new. Russian oil and gas imports have been discussed for a long time, and we have been preparing for this discussion. The government is working on sustainable solutions that can be implemented in a reasonably short time. We have variants and these variants are under discussion, and some are in concretization. Romania will be prepared and will cope if this approach is finally decided", says Klaus Iohannis.

The European Commission president on Wednesday proposed a gradual oil embargo on Russia due to the war in Ukraine, as well as the sanctioning of the most important Russian bank and the banning of Russian television on European frequencies, in an attempt to bolster Moscow's isolation.

The plan, if approved by EU governments, would mark a turning point for the world's largest trading bloc, which is dependent on Russian energy and needs to find alternative sources of supply.

"Today we are proposing to ban all Russian oil in Europe", European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

"This will be a complete import ban for all of Russia", she said.

The Commission's measures include phasing out supplies of Russian crude oil within six months and refined products by the end of 2022, Ursula von der Leyen said. It is committed to minimizing the impact on European economies.
