Electoral Bureau spokesman Iulian Alexandru Ivan said the decision was necessary in order to observe the deadlines imposed by electoral legislation. „The deadline for challenges submitted to the Court of Appeals expired at midnight last night. Since we had not received any feedback from the Court of Appeals, we took a decision on the basis of what we had. According to Law 35, we have strict deadlines and may not delay the electoral process to wait for court decisions,” Ivan said.

The Bucharest Court on Wednesday admitted the exception of unconstitutionality of Law 35/2008 raised by Green Party president Remus Cernea, regarding the rejection of his candidacy to the Chamber of Deputies partial elections, and forwarded the case to the Constitutional Court. The law in question prohibits independent candidates or candidates from parties without Parliament representation from participating in partial elections.
