“We need to decide to unify navigation regulations. The Rhine and Danube commissions have their own regulations each. A political decision to merge the two navigation regulations is essential and is the key to the problem (the development of the Rhine-Main-Danube corridor – e.n.),” Basescu told the media in the Romanian southeast port of Constanta.

Basescu said the fluvial corridor could become an alternative to transporting energy resources, as well as to rail and road transportation, contributing to cutting pollution.

He mentioned the Rhine has 700 navigable kilometers, utilized for transportation of 350 million tons of goods annually, while the Danube, with its 2200 navigable kilometers, is utilized for transportation of only 60 tons – 70 tons of goods annually.

The head of state called for Romanian and Dutch authorities alike to present in Brussels the project to build the Rhine-Main-Danube transport corridor.

Basescu arrived in Constanta port early Thursday to attend a conference aboard Dutch military ship "HNLMS Johan de Witt" on the logistic corridor Constanta-Rotterdam.

Dutch Navy ships the HNLMS Johan de Witt (built in Romania) and the HNLMS Rotterdam will be anchored in Constanta until April 10 to attend a bilateral military drill at the Black Sea, dubbed “Cooperative Lion 2009.”
