Liberal Democrats Want 2008 Budget Draft Withdrawn From Parliament
Theodor Stolojan, head of the Liberal Democratic Party, or PLD, asked that the 2008 budget draft be withdrawn from Parliament because it does not concur with the country’s economic reality.

Stolojan threatened that PLD would vote against the draft during the debates of the two chambers of Parliament.
He accused the government of adopting the method used by the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, between 2001 and 2004, sending the Parliament unfounded draft budgets.
Stolojan thinks that to send in Parliament a draft that does not concur with the economic reality in the country can have two major consequences: on the one hand, Parliament debates on a draft that is unsustainable, and on the other, it forces the government to operate three to five major budget revisions in one year, which goes against the democracy of parliament.
Stolojan asked “all politicians” who do not wish to become mere puppets and who care about Romania’s economy to join him in his attempt to prevent the country from entering a financial depression.
Stolojan, a former prime minister, presented Romania’s current economic situation stating that the minimum wage, considered for the 2008 budget draft at RON450, is already in disagreement with the RON500 wage the government proposed to unions.
The official said that the increase of the minimum wage would cause an increase in the gross average salary over the RON1,550 level set by the government for 2008.
Stolojan also criticized the government for not “wanting to observe its commitment to grant 6% of the gross domestic product to healthcare.”
