Liberals Announce Close Race With Ruling Party In Nationwide Poll
The chairman of Romania’s Liberal Party, Ludovic Orban, announced on Sunday that the group is tracking the ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD) only by 3% in large nationwide poll, recovering a difference of nearly 40% following the 2016 parliamentary election loss.

According to the liberal leader, 30% of respondents favor PSD for the upcoming MEP elections, while 27% would vote for the Liberal Party (PNL).
The poll questioned more than 26,000 citizens nationwide, and also tracked Government popularity and perception regarding different subjects.
“This is a catastrophic score for them (PSD, ed.). Just remember that in polls from January-February 2017, PSD reached a score of about 54-55%. After losing the elections, PNL had around 16-17%. PSD was known for having the most powerful core of sympathizers. This time, the base support for PSD dwindled,” Orban said in an interview for news station B1TV.
The PNL leader added that only 17.6% of respondents said that the country was going in a good direction, while 60% of the ruling party’s supporters consider that the country was headed in a wrong direction.
Political sources with knowledge of the poll told MEDIAFAX that the study showed a 30.2% support for PSD and 27.8% support for PNL. PSD ruling coalition partner ALDE was favored by 11.5% of respondents, while opposition party USR garnered a 10.2% support. The parties formed by former Romanian prime ministers Victor Ponta – Pro Romania – and Dacian Ciolos – PLUS – were credited with 5.5 and 5%, respectively.
