Local mountain rescue team spokesman Adrian Marin said the two tourists were caught in a heavy rainstorm and were struck by lighting about 300 meters away from the cabin.

He said the two, a couple, were aged between 30 and 35. Mountain rescuers and police have yet to determine whether the two were alone on the mountain or were part of a larger group.

Romanian weather authorities have issued a yellow code advisory expecting torrential rain, lightning and hail storms throughout the country from Friday at noon to Saturday evening. Flooding may also occur, hydrologists have warned.
