Borbely also said that 110,000 vouchers needed to scrap old cars have already been put in use on the market and stressed that authorities will continue to issue vouchers, if necessary.

Borbely pointed out the country’s Environment Fund has a total 1.8 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.0736) in funds and the 110,000 vouchers are worth nearly RON420 million, which means there are enough funds left to issue new vouchers.

The minister underscored that the 2010 clunkers program and the system used to calculate the car pollution tax will remain unchanged until the end of the year.

Mid-March this year, the government assigned an additional RON195 million for the 2010 clunkers program, to issue 50,000 new vouchers.

The scrapping bonus was kept at RON3,800 and the government initially said it plans to scrap 50,000 up to 60,000 old cars.

Romania’s 2010 clunkers program set off on February 18, after the Government relaunched the campaign for the scrapping of old cars. Under the new program, one owner can scrap multiple cars and receive multiple vouchers.
