“Like Mercedes and Mitsubishi, Audi also wants to make cars in Romania. They are currently looking at various sites to find the right location for their plants,” said Ovidiu Silaghi, the Romanian minister for small and medium-sized companies, trade and tourism.

Silaghi said Daimler has focused its attention on the Romanian western city of Timisoara, after deeming unfavorable another western town, Oradea, where soil problems would have hindered the carmaker’s plans.

“Audi’s plans are at too early a stage for me to give details about its targeted locations. I do know that Mitsubishi has put a lot of effort into its search of the right location in Romania,” Silaghi added.

In March, the Romanian government said the Japanese carmaker is considering investing in Romania, following talks with Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu.

Recent media reports indicate Daimler is looking to build a plant in either Poland or Romania, where new A and B-class models are likely to be built from 2011. A decision might be made in the second quarter of this year, according to the same reports.
