Basescu said he wanted to clarify some issues for those willing to accurately portray Romanian reality, so that the people know where their country stands.

The President stressed the importance of the support Romania receives from the European Union and the international financial institutions. He added that Romania has all the available „tools” to avoid a Greek-style crisis, but the problem is whether or not those tools will be used.

„I wouldn’t want the situation to come across as rosy”, the head of state said, adding that the current difficult situation allows for enforcing cuts and adjustments.

Basescu said the evolution of Romania’s democracy during the past twenty was paralleled by the development of clientelism, which the entire political class has come to accept. The only possible solution would be to reform the state apparatus, added the head of state.

The President said that the state cannot afford to fund its own poorly developed systems.
