Romania’s Liberal-Democrats, Democrats To Merge After EP Elections – Liberal Official
The liberal leader told a news conference Friday that on the birthday of Theodor Stolojan, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, or PLD, the heads of the liberal democrats and of democrats, together with President Traian Basescu, discussed options for the merger of the two political organizations.
"Traian Basescu would like the new party to be called People’s Union,” Hasotti said.
He said that even if PLD gets a good score in European Parliament elections, Stolojan will not leave for Brussels, but most likely will drop out to make room for the next candidate.
"Let’s assume PLD gets a good score in elections, although all polls indicate otherwise. Still, if that should happen, Stolojan, who is top of the list, has no intention to go to the European Parliament. This is a cheap strategy, trying to fool voters. Stolojan did the same in 2000, when he ran for the Chamber of Deputies and spent less than a day in parliament,” Hasotti said.
