Social democrat MEPs said the European Commission criticized, in the draft report, that Romania’s Parliament makes decisions regarding immunity and prosecution of dignitaries. Social democrat MEPs said the draft EC report requires Parliament to approve prosecutors’ claims without the possibility of rejection and calls on parties to leave politics out of the lawmaking process. The MEPs added the only positive remark in the report refers to the Anticorruption Department DNA, of which the EC allegedly said it maintained a good path of non-partisan investigations. However, the MEPs said, the statement is not backed by arguments and is in stark contrast with the widespread perception that the institution is highly politicized. European Commission spokesman Mark Gray told MEDIAFAX Friday that the Commission will not comment on any speculations regarding the report to be released on July 22.
