The protesters, members of Romania’s National Trade Union of Police and Customs Officers “Pro Lex” and of the Public Servants and Contractual Personnel Union “Forta Legii”, demanded a 30% salary rise, more personnel, bonuses and the enactment of several amendments to the Police Officers’ Statute.

The unionists in the public servants sector said they are discontent with the authorities’ refusal to resume negotiations for salary increases in 2009.

“Due to the discriminatory and obvious election-motivated approach to the salary issue, the negotiations regarding 2009 wages have not been resumed. The ones responsible, the true adversaries of the personnel in the Public Administration, are members of the whole political class, from Government to Opposition, from Parliament to the president of Romania,” public servants’ union leader, Ringo Damureanu said.
